Ending a relationship isn’t easy. If you’ve made up your mind that it can’t continue, you know you have a difficult task ahead of you. This gets harder the longer the relationship has lasted.

People and circumstances change. Our aspirations, desires and outlook evolve as we mature, and what suited us in one setting may be wrong for us in another. Because of this, many, but not all, relationships come to an end at some point. It’s just one of those things.

If you’re sure that your current relationship is not right for you, then you should end it as soon as you can.

Staying in a relationship that makes you uncomfortable is no good for either of you.

Do them the courtesy of giving them as much time as possible to rebound and move on with their lives. No matter what happens at first, things will be tough, but the sooner they have a chance to recover, the better things are.

Don’t forget about yourself either.

Why deprive yourself of the joys you could experience by either being single and independent, or via a new relationship with someone who happens to be a better fit for you?
When you’re absolutely sure that you want to make a break, take a tip from me and don’t use text messaging, email or even the phone to do it. You might get away with these methods if you’ve only been seeing each other for a short time, but otherwise, they’re not a good idea.

The best way to do this is to meet in person in a public place. This will help you make a clean break and avoid you both feeling awkward. Ending a relationship in private is very tricky, it can drag on and you might have trouble getting the other person to leave.

However you go about it, ending a relationship is probably one of the hardest things you’ll have to do. It’s just one of those things that have to be done. So, take heart, once you’ve put your feelings into words, the unpleasant part will soon be over and eventually you’ll both be glad you did it.
